Why Carbohydrates

Apart from the fact that the Company's Founders have specialised in carbohydrate chemistry and biochemistry for many years, both academically and industrially, carbohydrates:

Can be used as active nutritional or pharmaceutical components of formulations

Are active with respect to many physiological roles

Can be tailored to make different types of excipients

Contain a broad range of sizes and structures which can be manipulated ('tuned') to physically encapsulate or chemically bond therapeutic and nutritional agents and control their release

Are made/used by the body in for cell recognition/ immune responses

Transmit energy through the body

Provide a number of key dietary roles

Are generally safe and are usually recognised as biologically inert (although some do have, for example, antigenic activity)

Are established food/pharmaceutical grade materials, where their physico-chemical properties can be selected and modified for specific (healthcare) applications

Are relatively low cost

Are not associated with biologically infective agents (due to predominant plant origin)

Are inert and have very long stability in some cases

Have a plentiful supply chain
