Why Carbohydrates
Apart from the fact that the Company's Founders specialised in carbohydrate chemistry and biochemistry (!), carbohydrates:
Contain a broad range of sizes and structures which can be manipulated ('tuned') to physically encapsulate or chemically bond therapeutic and nutritional agents
They are generally safe and are usually recognised as biologically inert (although some do have, for example, antigenic activity)
Materials used by Glycologic Limited for encapsulation are food/pharmaceutical grade and their physico-chemical properties are selected for the specific application
Carbohydrate based excipients are relatively low cost
Unlike gelatine, carbohydrates are not associated with biologically infective agents
Matrices made from carbohydrates are inert and have very long stability
There is a plentiful supply chain of these materials
Nutritionally, carbohydrates are dealt with differently providing unique opportunities in the GI tract.
